Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you have a standard waiting list?
After 10 years of managing a waiting list we have decided to venture out and do it differently. We feel it is better for the family adopting, and for us! With this process you are not putting several deposits in with numerous breeders in hopes of getting a puppy of your dreams. And possibly waiting years for that opportunity. And we are able to spend all those hours with our puppies and dogs instead of managing the waiting list.
-We do NOT take a deposit.
-We do NOT have a waiting list.
When you and your family are ready for your puppy you can start following our
upcoming litters/breeding plans and updates. Then follow the steps listed to the right.
NO one will get to adopt a puppy without an approved application!
Is this process stressful?
While all adoptions can feel a bit overwhelming or stressful it is also a very exciting time! And in all the years of doing this I have never had anyone say I wish I would have chosen a different puppy! It always seems to work out as it should! So have fun with it and don't stress!

What are my payment options?
Square Business excepts Visa, MasterCard, Amex, & Discover in debt or credit. The credit card fee is paid by us.

*Before you purchase, we recommend notifying your credit card company or bank in case they flag it as a fraudulent purchase. Let your bank or credit card company know you will be making this purchase from 406 Acres LLC. This will eliminate any stress upon adoption day!

At what age do the puppies go up for adoption?
Between 5 and 6 weeks old. At this age we have a good sense of coat, personalities, size & confirmation. Once a litter is born the adoption day and go home date will be listed.

Additional Adoption Options for those equipped & interested...

1.) Purchasing Breeding Rights
Are you interested in purchasing breeding rights from us? If so, this may be an option for you! We are offering breeding rights to future buyers for $8,000-$10k depending on the puppy. If you choose this option you will pay for the price of the puppy and the additional cost of the breeding rights. What this option allows you is a guaranteed puppy from us! As breeders we will always have 1st pick of the litters.  So, if you buy breeding rights from us you will have 1st or 2nd pick of the litters we have up for adoption depending on our needs. You will sign a breeding rights contract from us to ensure ethicacy and the responsibility you will have for your puppy and this process. We understand that this may not be an option for everyone. In addition, you do not have to breed your Bernedoodle if you purchase breeding rights from us, it is solely an option for you and a way to receive a guaranteed 1st or 2nd pick from our Bernedoodle litters. Please reach out to us directly via text, call or email if you are interested in this option!

2.)   3 Month Minimum Turnkey training with one of our in home trainers.
Are you interested in our Turnkey training program? If so, this may be an option for you! We are offering an opportunity to have pick of the litter after 406 and those folks who have purchased breeding rights from us. What this means is that you will be able to have a guaranteed bernedoodle from us if you do choose to commit to 3 months training with one of our trainers. Training cost $5000 per month. This option would mean you would pay for 3 months of training and the cost of the puppy. We understand that this may not be an option for everyone. If you are interested in this option please reach out to us directly via text, call or email and we would be happy to discuss this further.
Why are your prices higher than most other breeders?
We go by the old standby "anything worth doing is worth doing well" or in our minds excellent!
A great puppy starts with great parents.  We look at health, temperament and confirmation, all three of these are a must. Having a happy mama and papa also play a huge roll, along with a lot of attention, free leash walks, on leash training, swimming or romping in the snow.  This is a part of our daily routine for our adult dogs.

We do NOT have kennel dogs! It is a huge priority at 406 that our dogs have an outstanding life! Our puppies are exposed to a whole list of socialization and handling every day so that all 406 puppies go to their new homes with the correct start.  Not to mention all the office work, grooming, sanitizing and cleaning it takes to be sure our doggies are healthy, clean and happy! We have a high standard of what is acceptable and that takes lots of time, which also means a large of financial investment. With that comes an amazing outcome! We LOVE what we do, we have the best family and employees that pour their heart and soul into every heartbeat on this place daily! Check out 406, you won't be disappointed.

What options do I have to get my new puppy home?
-You can drive to Bozeman, MT to get your puppy directly from us and meet the parents, etc!
-You can pay myself or one of our drivers to meet you part way to get your puppy.
Cost is just the government set rate per mile.
-You can fly into BZN to get your puppy. Either by coming to our home or we can meet you at the airport with your puppy if you are flying right back out.
-Fly nanny
-The fly nanny we have used in the past is wonderful but can be booked up quick when we have lots of puppy go homes! His contact information is on the puppy preparation page. Please contact him if you are not able to pick your puppy up yourself.

Do you book the fly nanny if that is how we want our puppy to go home?
No we let you take care of that, this way there is less chance of a miscommunication and you are able to book whom you feel most comfortable with. We do have a recommended fly nanny that we have worked with listed on our "preparation" page. Once you book your fly nanny you just need to stay in touch with us on the go home and if a health certificate is needed.
When can I get my puppy?
At 8 weeks old

How can I tell if I am allergic to a Bernedoodle?
First of all I want to clear up a common misunderstanding, there is NO such thing as a “HYPOALLERGENIC” dog. If you have allergies please get educated and spend time visiting various breeds to see how you react to them. If you live near us we are happy to set up a time for you to meet a Bernedoodle and see how you react to it. If you are allergic to a dog licking you, you will most likely be allergic to all dogs even non-shedding ones. Bernedoodles are known to be very allergy friendly.

Do you have a health guarantee, or a puppy contract?

What sizes of BD's do you breed?

~all of these weights will be more exact when we know which parents are paired together for a litter

What is the 406 Preparation Page?
We have a password protected "406 Puppy Preparation page" it has additional information that we have learned and researched to help you prepare for your puppy. This will help you raise your puppy into a healthy, happy adult with nutrition and training advice. It also has the list of what you need to have bought before your puppy comes home.

What are the different generations in Bernedoodles?
F1 – is a first generation cross, in which the pup is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50%. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases.
F1b – is a back cross in which a Bernedoodle is bred with a poodle. The puppy is 25% Berner, and 75% Poodle. F1b puppies (aka tiny Bernedoodles) are the most likely to be non-shedding and the most allergy-friendly. You could also do it 75% Berner and 25% poodle, but it's not as common.
F2 – is a second-generation cross, in which an F1 Bernedoodle is crossed with another F1 Bernedoodle.

Australian Bernedoodle- Australian Labradoodle crossed with a Bernese Mountain Dog. The Australian Labradoodle is not to be confused with with American labradoodle, and no there is no Australian Shepard in an Australian Labradoodle. Please look the breed up, they are on there own a very cool multi generational breed. They were started in the 80's in Australia.
Teddy Bear Bernedoodle- is a cross of an f1 mini Bernedoodle to an Australian Bernedoodle, smaller than the f1 mini and more compact and square. They are extremely adorable, have amazing coats and temperaments.

What are the different coat types of a Bernedoodle?
Straight is the most like to shed but will need less daily brushing and regular clipping.
Wavy is a nice mix of the two, very little shedding, and not too much daily grooming needed.
Curly is going to be non-shedding (generally) and the best for those with allergies but require more brushing and clipping.
While Bernedoodles vary in appearance and coat type, an experienced breeder will be able to give you an idea of what the pup will look like as an adult, based on what the parents have produced in the past and what traits they see in the pup.
***By the time the puppies are 5-6 weeks old I can usually start to know what coat type they will have.

Can I visit my puppy before I pick it up to take it home?
Yes! We usually have a puppy visiting for those getting a puppy, or on the puppy waiting list. Generally this visit takes place around 6-7 weeks old which is when you will choose which puppy will be going home with you at 8 weeks old.

Do you do a puppy personality test?
Yes, we use the Volhard test. Although I am around my puppies so much that I can usually tell you how they are going to react in situations long before we test.  The test is recommended to use at 8 weeks old, but since our puppies go home at 8 weeks the test is done around 7 weeks so it's not always a 100% accurate it is still a good tool to use in making a puppy pick.

Do you remove the dewclaws?
Yes - rears only

What does my puppy come home with?

-first set of shots at 7.5  weeks old
-de-worming at 2, 4, & 6  weeks old.
-checked by our vet
-rear dew claws removed
-blanket that smells like mom/siblings
-toy
-very well-started on potty training,
~started on crate training and the basic commands

-small bag of food
-spay/neuter contract
-access to our closed group FB page where you can meet and learn from others.
-access to your litters private Instagram group.
-access to our 406 Preparation page
-and of course lifetime support from us!

Will you let my puppy fly home to me?
Yes- I have done enough research on it to feel good about it. Furthermore, my pups that have flown to their new homes or to us have always done very well with it.  So PetSafe, a fly nanny or you flying into pick your pup up and fly home are all options.  As well as of course flying.

Are your puppies/dogs in your home?
Yes!

Can I come visit your home and dogs/puppies?
Sometimes, but it is very limited. We do have a puppy open house, so if you are either on our puppy list, or seriously considering a puppy, this maybe the best time for you to visit. As you can imagine we would have a continual "tour" going if we didn't limit this and then it would be hard for us to get all of our work with our dogs done or have family time.  Not to mention the more people who come to see our dogs the more our puppies and dogs are exposed to in way of diseases.

What if something happens and I can no longer care for my Bernedoodle?
We will ALWAYS take our puppies back and be sure they are in the perfect home for them.

Is there treats, or toys that you recommend?
Yes- once you have put a deposit down you will receive a password. Then, you can go under the "406 preparation" link to get a lot more info on these types of things and what I recommend.

What size collar do you recommend for me to get for when I pick up my puppy?
Information on this is also under the "406 DOG Family" link.

Can I stay in contact with you after I get my puppy?
YES!
Please do!  We love to hear about our puppies and how they are doing. Plus, we are always here to help you with any struggles you maybe having with your pup/dog. And, in general we just enjoy updates on how things are going. Furthermore, please know that if you are ever having any health or temperament problems with your puppy/dog I must be notified immediately. It is very important for our breeding program to know what is going on with our puppies as they age. This is also stated in our contract.

Picture
Do you sell any of your dogs with breeding rights?
Yes, on occasion. Please contact me if this is something you are interested in and we can talk. Otherwise, all our puppies are sold with a strict spay/neuter contract.

Do you stud out your stud dogs?
Yes to approved & health tested bitches.

Do you microchip your puppies?
This is your choice, we can microchip your puppy here for you at 7.5 weeks of age or you can do it at your vets. This has been a subject of controversy, and for the health of the dog,  we have decided to leave this subject up the each individual family.  I would recommend that you research it on your own and also ask your vets opinion.

Health Certificates
We can have our vet get you a health certificate to fly your puppy home. Just let us know and we will get that organized for you.

Will my puppy be up to date on shots and worming?
Yes, of course, your puppy is de wormed at 4, 6 and 8 weeks and your puppy will be up to date on all puppy shots.
(Records of this will be passed on to you when you receive your puppy.)

Can I get copies of the parents heath clearances?
Yes, all of our dogs have full health clearances.  They are on password protected preparation page, you can look at them there or print them for your records. Unfortunately we have had people steel them off of our site and now put them on the password protected page.

Can you tell how many puppies a mom is having?
Not accurately on a female the size of a Berner. We used to try to do x-rays but it was never accurate. So now we ultrasound 30 day's after breeding to confirm pregnancy and usually get an idea of it's a big or small litter. But nothing accurate on a puppy count.

Do you know how many boys vs girls will be born?
No we can not tell that until the puppies are born.

How long is a dogs gestation?
Its about 9 weeks from first breeding. We generally know within a couple of days what the due date is.  And can confirm a pregnancy about 30 days  after breeding with ultrasound.

Will my puppy fade or change color?
The fading gene comes from the poodle and at this point it is not genetically testable, so yes your puppy could change color or fade and no breeder can guarantee that there puppies won't fade.
How much food do they eat?
It is best to look at the dog food feeding guidelines to get an accurate idea of this. Each food is a little different. I would roughly say a full grown Bernedoodle will eat between 3 and 4 cups a day. A mini will eat more like 1.5-2 cups a day.

Feeding recommendations:
Feeding & nutritional recommendations will all be posted under the "406 preparation". Password will be given to you once a deposit is received.

Skyline Veterinarian Recommendation

To Whom It May Concern,

Congratulations in advance on your search for a new family member!

If you are looking for a puppy from 406 Acres, you’ve come to the right place.

Tori and her staff treat their dogs with respect, compassion, and as part of the family. Their dogs are kept in clean areas, allowed to play outside, taken for walks around the acreage daily, and lead engaging, interactive lives. This is not a puppy mill environment, more of a pack of happy dogs.

Tori and her staff communicate effortlessly and involve a veterinarian if any of the dogs need medical attention. However, because of their experience and robust breeding programs, this is rarely needed. All dogs are kept up to date on their vaccines and deworming to ensure their health.

All dogs within the breeding program are tested and proven to be free of negative genetic health issues. You can see their testing results on the website. If a dog does not meet or beat the standard for breeding, Tori will spay or neuter it and find a quality pet home instead of keeping it in her breeding program.

Tori and her staff are up front, honest, and will help resolve any issues should one arise. They stand behind the healthy dogs they breed.

I hope you find the perfect puppy for your family.

Sincerely,
Kelsey Baver, DVM
